Pet Groomers: Let an AI Caller Work Your Unbooked Inquiry List

Every groomer has a pile of 'how much for my doodle?' messages that never turned into appointments. An AI outbound caller can work that list while you're at the table.

By Paglow Automations

Every grooming shop I talk to has the same pile. One is a Facebook message asking what a full groom costs for a 60-pound goldendoodle. Another is a website form from someone new to Lima who needs a groomer before the holidays. Then there's the voicemail you heard at 7 p.m., with the dryer still ringing in your ears, and meant to return the next morning. Each of those people raised their hand. Most of them never got a real conversation, because you were working through a matted shih tzu and the follow-up slipped.

That pile is the job for an outbound AI caller. It doesn't answer your phone. It calls out to people who already asked about you and gets them onto the books.

Why that list is worth working now

People are spending on their pets. The American Pet Products Association's 2026 State of the Industry report put U.S. pet spending at $158 billion in 2025 and projects $165 billion for 2026. Grooming falls under APPA's "other services" category. That category also covers boarding, training, pet sitting and insurance, and it came to $14.3 billion last year. Most groomers in Allen County don't lack demand. What's hard is turning the interest you already have into bookings without losing hours at the table.

Timing matters as well. If someone asks about a first groom on Monday and hears nothing until Thursday, they've probably booked with whoever got back to them first.

What the calls actually sound like

Paglow's Outbound Caller is a calling agent set up for your shop alone, with your services, your prices and your rules. It opens with what the person asked about: "Hi, I'm the shop's AI scheduling assistant, calling back about the full groom you asked about for Bailey, your goldendoodle. Got a minute?" There's no canned pitch.

Then it handles the questions that usually stall a booking:

  • "What will it really cost?" It gives your price range by size and coat and explains matting or de-shed charges the way you would.
  • "My dog gets anxious." It describes how you handle nervous first-timers, including shorter intro visits if you offer them.
  • "What do I need to bring?" It tells them which vaccine records you require.
  • "I'll think about it." It offers the next two open slots. If they still pass, it notes that and politely moves on.

When someone is ready, it books them straight onto your calendar, into slots you've marked open. That means no phone tag and nothing to copy into your scheduling book by hand. You get a full transcript of every call, so before Bailey walks in you already know she hates having her feet handled and her owner wants a teddy bear face, not a shave-down.

You review the script and every objection answer before launch. If you'd never promise "we can squeeze anything in," it won't either.

Consent, and where to start

In February 2024 the FCC ruled that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" voices under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. In general, that means calls using them need the person's prior consent. That's why this works on a follow-up list and not a cold list. The people being called filled out your form, messaged you or left a number asking to hear back. Keep a record of how each one reached you. Add a line to your inquiry form saying you may follow up by phone, including with an automated assistant. Have the caller say up front that it's AI. These rules are still changing, so check your setup with whoever handles your legal questions.

To get started, pull the last 60 days of unbooked inquiries: messages, form fills and voicemails asking for a callback. Count them. For a lot of one- and two-table shops the number is bigger than they expect, and every name on it already wanted what you do.

That list is the first thing we'd give Outbound Caller. If you groom in Lima or anywhere in Allen County and want to see what working it properly looks like, Paglow will go through it with you.
